Well, it looks like it’s really going to happen. We seem to be only a few months away from an actual presentation of the modular phone. The Phonebloks team released a new video today, showing the latest version of the prototype. Yes, it really works. It boots up rather slowly, but it does work.
The team says that in this current configuration of the prototype (Spiral 1 they call it), about fifty percent of the available space is dedicated to making the modularity possible. In Spiral 2, the next generation of the prototype, there will be a lot more space for developers and users. This due to Toshiba building some custom chips for the project. That latest edition of the phone is not shown in the video, but it is mentioned that Spiral 2 will be shown at Google’s just announced Project Ara Developer Conference on January 14th.
Each time I see or hear of some new development concerning Project Ara, I get a little more excited. I suspect that you might feel the same. Because, it doesn’t matter if you think the modular phone will succeed or fail, the ingenuity, creativity, dedication and hard work being put in on it has to impress.
Many of us are rooting for you Phonebloks and Google.
