We reported last Sunday (09/07/2014) that HTC had abandoned any plans to create a smartwatch of their own. We received that info from Pocket-lint, who were quoting an inside source of theirs. Today, CNET reported that their sources say that HTC is still very much intent on releasing a smartwatch and that we’ll all be seeing it in 2015.
Of course, we now know that the Apple Watch will be released early in 2015 and the smartwatch market is becoming more crowded, almost weekly. According to CNET, this in no way has deterred HTC plans. The word is that the Taiwanese phone maker intends to create a device that will “stand out from the crowd.” HTC is already known for creating designs that separate them for other smart phone makes and it seems that they are bent on continuing that reputation with their smartwatch.
Despite newly released watches from Samsung, Asus, Motorola and Apple, HTC believes that their offering will be one that consumers will more immediately gravitate toward. HTC has sent out invitations to an event in New Your City on October 8th, but the company won’t be discussing the smartwatch there, CNET was told.
Thus far, sales of wearables are considered to be weak according to a study by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. In the US, China, Europe, Japan and Australia less that 1 percent of consumers own a smartwatch. We’ll have to see if HTC can turn that trend to their favor in the coming year.
