After months of the usual rumors, leaks and speculation, Samsung revealed the new Galaxy Note 7 this morning at an 11 am New York event. As expected, much of the design is based on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, but the new Note did bring it’s own uniqueness as always. The waterproofing and outstanding camera have been brought forward from the S7, along with the “Edge UX”software features.
But, of course, the Note has the beloved S Pen with improvements and the much talked about iris scanner. Also new for Samsung is the long awaited USB-C standard, which many bemoaned about not appearing on the S7 and S& Edge. Hopefully, this means that Samsung will be sticking with USB-C going forward. The Note 7 is also the very first phone with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5, which was only announced a few weeks ago. Corning claims that this new glass will be able to withstand drops of five feet onto hard, rough surfaces with an 80% survival rate. Great news for those of us with “fumble fingers.”
Overall features of the Note 7:
- iris scanner
- USB Type C standard
- IP68 (waterproof) rating
- Smart Select GIF feature included in the S Pen
- Micro SD card up to 256 GB
- 5.7-inch Dual-edge Super AMOLED display
- Quad-core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or
Octa-core Samsung Exynos 8 - 3,500mAh Fast charging battery
The iris scanner uses a separate camera, not a part of the selfie camera, along with an infrared light. From what I’ve seen from the reviewers at the event, it appears promising.
The Note 7 features a curved design like the Galaxy S7 Edge. There’s only one variant, as opposed to the rumored two. The off screen memo feature from last year’s Note is still there, allowing you to make a quick note on the blank screen without unlocking. And, new for the Note, an Always On display to which you can pin the aforementioned note. A newly designed Gear VR headset for the Note 7 was also announced. The Galaxy Note 7 will be available in Silver, Gold Platinum, Blue Coral and Black Onyx.
