This past March, I posted an article about ZTE and how I believed that the Shenzhen based company would be making a major push into the North American market this year. See below. Now, the Chinese manufacturer has scheduled a July 14th press event in New York City. Interestingly, the event is publicizing a new high-end smartphone line known as Axon. This seems to be the basis for ZTE’s latest line of phone models (though the ZTE name itself is nowhere to be found) and the start of their push into the US. Up until now, the Nubia line has represented ZTE at the high-end but, Axon looks to be the new ‘flagship’ branding aimed at the US.
At http://axonphone.com/ there is a teaser for the phone, along with some advertising type specs that makes the device look quite attractive. Though we don’t as yet have all of the specifications, 4 GB of RAM is touted, which seems to be the upcoming new standard as evidenced by the Asus ZenFone 2. The camera is dual-lens, dual-LED flash, with 4K video capabilities. For audio, the Axon claims Hi-Fi audio playback and recording using twin microphones. The page mentions a ‘large battery’ without telling the specific size, but does describe the phone as a ‘total beast’. There is also a contest with the possibility of winning $10,000 or a new Axon phone.
We’ll know more after the 14th, but this would seem to be more evidence that the Asian manufacturers and ZTE in particular are dedicated to making themselves known to American consumers and making profitable inroads in North America. With the Asus and Alcatel recent releases and Hauwei rumored to be making one of the new Nexus phones, I think we’ll be hearing a lot more from across the Pacific, so stay tuned.
